May 20th marks World Bee Day, a day created by the United
Nations to raise awareness for the essential role bees and other
pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy. This
World Bee Day, we're shining a spotlight on the Trust's Beelines
initiative, continuing the work and support we have shown the
project since 2021. The iconic chalk grassland of the South Downs
attracts bees and butterflies with its stunning wildflowers.
However, historical ploughing and intensive farming over many
decades have made it harder for pollinating species to move around
the countryside, leading to a worrying decline in population
numbers. By working with landowners and farmers to establish new
wildflower corridors, the project aims to support pollinators by
linking these vital habitats for insects.
